MigrainesHopefully, you are not suffering from a migraine at the moment. In fact, I'm pretty sure you're not. As a migraine sufferer myself, I know that there is no way you would be reading this web page during a migraine attack. I am not a doctor, and have no formal medical background. I have suffered from migraines for well over a decade now and I am fascinated with this subject. I have read many books and articles about migraines over the years, and this website here is my attempt at putting together a condense version of the knowledge which I have acquired. With migraines, knowledge is power. The more we know, the better we can prevent and control them. There is no magic cure for this particular medical condition at this point in time, but there is a growing understanding of it. Let us start by saying that migraines are not just headaches. The assumption that a migraine is some sort of a bad headache is something that makes some people belittle the experience and think that migraine sufferers are making too much of a fuss over a headache. What is a migraine? well, there are different types, and even then, the symptoms differ from one patient to another, but overall, my best way to describe this would be like a storm taking over your head and body. It is an all-consuming experience, where a person can go through a variety of symptoms (usually in various stages), all with varying degrees of intensity. An acute headache is usually one of the more prominent symptoms, but it's not the only one. In fact, it's not always there. You can have a migraine without a headache (this is sometimes referred to as a Silent Migraine). You can read more in this site about the symptoms of migraines, but keep in mind that these vary immensely from one patient to another. The overall debilitating effect of a migraine, lasting anything from a few hours to a few days (and even weeks sometime!) is always there. It often has both physical and mental symptoms, in effect paralyzing the sufferer from doing anything during the intense stages of a migraine. Going through an episode can be scary, as well as painful. Understanding your condition can help reduce the fear. I know it has for me, and I hope it will for you as well.
